Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Review

A taste
Modern Warfare 2 takes things a step further from the brilliant Call of Duty 4. That title offered an enjoyable single-player component but was ultimately a multiplayer offering, one that still, to this day, has a dedicated and populated following. Where MW2 excels is in its presentation, accessibility and multiplayer balancing, opening the door for FPS and online gaming novices. It’s been one of the most anticipated games this generation and thankfully, that hype hasn’t gone unwarranted. While it may lack an interesting and coherent story for the single-player campaign, the experience is still very much worth the ride.

New Super Mario Bros. Wii Review

A taste
New Super Mario Bros. is one of my favourite games on the Nintendo DS. It brought back my childhood of spending countless hours in front of the NES playing the original Super Mario Bros. This was during the mid-nineties, and while everyone else was flaunting their SNES, I was content with a then 10-year-old game, a game that has gone down in the history books as one of the greatest ever made. I was over the moon when New Super Mario Bros. Wii was announced at E3 this year, and even more excited when a November release was confirmed. I had a few concerns with the direction of co-op and super guide, but I can safely say that New Super Mario Bros. Wii is the perfect way to relive a classic series.

DJ Hero Review

A taste
DJ Hero is the latest music venture by Activision, one that tries to introduce gamers to the challenges associated with mixing and scratching two completely different music tracks. Even if you can’t scratch or have no sense of rhythm whatsoever, it really won’t matter, because DJ Hero is all about the music, more so than what it is about the actual skills required to be a DJ.

Forza Motorsport 3 Review

A taste
Gran Turismo has been the king of racing sims for the past decade, but be aware, Forza is coming; in fact, it may already be in poll position. Developer Turn 10 has mixed things up in Forza Motorsport 3, for the better. Most importantly they’ve made what was once a daunting genre for non-diehard fans into a game that can be played by the most casual of gamers through to series veterans. They’ve thrown the traditional conventions of what constitutes a racing sim out the window, and crafted what is one of the greatest racing games ever made.

The Box Review

A taste
Richard Kelly is a cinematic enigma. His films challenge the viewer like no others and you’d be forgiven for thinking you’re a bit slow after seeing any of his films. His career started on Donnie Darko, a film that has since been hailed as the best of this generation, a film loved and adored by film fanatics across the globe. He followed this up with Southland Tales (a film I absolutely adore), a film that got booed at Cannes, got delayed for 2 years and was eventually released to extremely negative and harsh reviews. Now the man of much confusion and mystery has returned with his most mainstream film to date, The Box.

Borderlands Review

A taste
I’m going to finish on the note that I began on. Borderlands is a fantastic FPS RPG – when playing co-op. It’s almost a different game when playing with 3 mates, as that same gameplay, which became bland and repetitive alone just works. The RPG elements are designed for more than one player, as is the combat. If you’re looking for a solo experience then stay away, on the contrary if you’re after a co-op RPG/FPS hybrid then Borderlands is right up there as one of the best of the year.

Spyborgs Review

A taste
Spyborgs is a futuristic themed beat ‘em up developed by Bionic Games and published by Capcom. As most gamers would know, Capcom already credit some big name beat ‘em ups in their extensive library including the Street Fighter, Final Fight and Marvel vs. Capcom series; and for fans of these series and classic arcade beat ‘em ups in general, you will be pleasantly surprised by what Spyborgs has to offer.

Grand Theft Auto: The Ballad of Gay Tony Review

A taste
The Ballad of Gay Tony is a fantastic game. Just like its predecessor, it actually feels like an “episode”: a continuation of a story that has progressed substantially. The characters are more likeable than in The Lost and Damned, but the story isn’t quite as grounded as before. That’s OK, because whatever this game loses in its narrative it regains back in its glamour and explosiveness. It’s big, it’s bad and it’s messy. There are probably more memorable missions in Ballad than in all of GTA IV, due purely to their outrageous nature. Each of the new weapons is great, as are the new vehicles. Base jumping is an awesome inclusion and is great fun and the multiplayer has been improved slightly for a better overall experience. If this is our final visit to Liberty City, it’s definitely worth it.

Grand Theft Auto: Episodes from Liberty City

A taste
We’ve experienced a hell of a lot in Liberty City. Rockstar have done a superb job of expanding its life by showing gamers different worlds within the city. With Grand Theft Auto IV we were told the story of an individual through Niko, a Russian immigrant with nothing to his name. With The Lost and Damned, we joined Johnny as he fought his way through gang warfare on the rough streets of LC. Then, with The Ballad of Gay Tony, we see the rich take on the rich in an exclusive world of friendship and family through the eyes of Luis Lopez. Are the travels through the city worth it and will we want to visit again?

WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2010 Review

A taste
The WWE Smackdown vs. Raw series hasn’t changed much over the years. While it has always offered an entertaining and fulfilling experience for wrestling fans it’s been a while since it’s shaken things up with new modes. Aside from some roster updates and a few new features, the game has practically stayed the same over the past few iterations. Thankfully, WWE Smackdown vs. Raw 2010 mixes things up a bit. It may not be a completely unique experience for the franchise, but it at least gives us some new modes and tries to differ itself from its predecessors.

Brutal Legend Review

A taste
Developed by legendary game designer Tim Schafer, staring Jack Black, featuring awesome music, great gameplay and a humorous narrative. On paper Brutal Legend appears to have everything going for it. To an extent it does, and that’s why it’s such a hard game to review. As a mash-up of an action brawler, RTS and escort racer Brutal Legend is great in some areas, but tries to be a jack of all trades when it needed to focus on one of its more favourable aspects.

Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story Review

A taste
Why wasn’t Bowser given his own game earlier? I mean, even Peach had one (and just between us it wasn’t half bad). Big bad Bowser finally stars as a lead character in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story. Technically it isn’t his game per se, but Bowser fans should be honoured that he takes the lead in what is quickly becoming one of our favourite series. It’s only the third game in the Mario & Luigi franchise, but it feels like another of Nintendo’s classic, long-running, series already. Rather than simply bring Paper Mario from consoles to handhelds Ninty decided to take the same concept, combined what had already been established in previous Mario RPG titles, and develop an entirely new game. In this day and age of sequels, ports and multiplatform titles that’s something special. Enough about that, let’s move on and see how Bowser’s Inside Story stacks up on its own accord.

NBA 2K10 Review

A taste
The rivalry between the NBA 2K and NBA Live series’ hit its peak in 2006 when Live hit an all-time low and 2K was the ball game to beat. Since then, it’s as if 2K Sports’ basketball sim was the Lakers and Live was the Bobcats – you always knew who was going to come out on top. While Live improved slowly over the years, the 2K series always brought the same level of quality to the table. However, unlike any good NBA team, 2K doesn’t seem to be planning for the future, staying put in its current form as it has been for the past four years. It still hasn’t addressed key issues that have plagued it for years and considering the major jump in quality in NBA Live 10, NBA 2K10 may be the last game that comes out on top if it doesn’t start mixing things up.

Uncharted 2: Among Thieves Review

A taste
Uncharted 2: Among Thieves is, simply put, a perfect blend of action, adventure, exploration, combat, humour, emotion, platforming and puzzle solving. It’s an accessible fusion of highly addictive gameplay mechanics that propel it high above any other action-adventure title we’ve seen this generation. Developer Naughty Dog’s sequel to the critical and commercially successful Drake’s Fortune is substantially better across pretty much every main aspect of the experience, making it one of the best video-game sequels of all time.

Spectrobes: Origins Review

A taste
It won’t take you long to realize that Spectrobes: Origins is essentially Pokemon in a different wrapper. What’s great about that is that it’s on the Wii and not a handheld, meaning that Disney have achieved more with this game than what Nintendo have with Pokemon on consoles in the past. Origins is definitely one of the biggest surprise packets of the year, one that should appeal to a younger gaming audience, but also to more mature gamers who want a very solid action/adventure title.

Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars Review

A taste
Chinatown Wars on the PSP is exactly the sort of game the handheld needs. It’s a genuine on-the-go gaming experience. While it’s not as fresh as it was on the DS, it’s still so much fun and great all round. It still has the same core experience from the DS. While it doesn’t have the great touch-screen gameplay aspects, the missions are still all there and the main gameplay mechanics work well on the PSP. It has a great story with plenty of charm and humour. There’s plenty of depth here to keep it in your PSP for a long time, plus PSP-exclusive missions and content through the Rockstar Social Club.

Marvel Ultimate Alliance 2 Review

A taste
Sequels are flooding the game market nowadays. It’s not necessarily a bad thing, but how much of the core game needs to change to justify the purchase? The first Marvel Ultimate Alliance was a great Action beat-em-up, with some RPG elements thrown in for good measure. The sequel, three years in the making, gameplay-wise is almost exactly the same game. You would expect that from a sequel, but when it’s so similar is it really worth playing through it all again?

Star Wars The Clone Wars: Republic Heroes Review

A taste
Believe it or not, but there were happier times for the Star Wars brand. Going back 14 years ago there was no Jar-Jar Binks. It’s hard to imagine the world without him, ha? It’s not that the bombardment of Star Wars content we’ve seen over the past decade is bad in quality, but it doesn’t do much justice for the franchise. Truth is, the Star Wars universe isn’t so deep that we actually care what happened a few hundred years before Anakin turned emo. Or what happened between any of the six main episodes. Yet we still get spin-off after spin-off, be it in the form of a game, book or television series. Thankfully, The Clone Wars animated series is actually pretty decent, as was its predecessor in Star Wars: Clone Wars from about six years ago. Unfortunately, the game based on the latest series in Star Wars: The Clone Wars - Republic Heroes is anything but decent. It’s actually probably one of the worst platformers this generation.

Kingdom Hearts 358/2 Days Review

A taste
Kingdom Hearts made a name for itself when it was launched last generation on the PS2. If you’re not in the know developer, Square Enix, grabbed some characters from Final Fantasy, mixed them in with some Disney favourites and created something special. There have only been two instalments in what we consider to be the ‘main series’ so far, and Kingdom Hearts 358/2 days is yet another spin-off. The question is does the PS2 classic transfer flawlessly to the handheld DS?

Mini Ninjas Review

A taste
When it was announced that IO Interactive were releasing a ninja game, one might have been forgiven for thinking it would be based on cold blooded assassins in the same style as their ‘Hitman’ series. But this is not the case with their latest game, ‘Mini Ninjas’, a G-rated, ‘Kung-Fu Panda meets Zelda’ adventure with anime style characters. But fear not, it seems that Mini Ninjas is proof that IO Interactive can balance two entirely different genres.

Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter Review

A taste
The concept behind Drawn to Life is definitely ambitious: draw your own hero and bring them into a world that needs saving…and drawing. The execution of such an idea is obviously the most important aspect of the concept, and when the first title in the series hit the DS it was met with critical acclaim. The combination of great stylus and touch-screen gameplay, nice visuals and a charming story made Drawn to Life one of the most unique and entertaining experiences on the handheld. When Drawn to Life: The Next Chapter was announced for the Wii, the question was asked as to how developer Planet Moon Studios would make the difficult transition from drawing on the touch-screen to drawing in mid-aid with the Wii-mote. While the final product isn’t quite as fluid as it was on the DS, the Wii version of The Next Chapter still offers an entertaining adventure, one that should appeal to both a younger and older audience.

NBA Live 10 Review

A taste
The once glorious NBA Live franchise has been anything but over the past few years. Its entry into the current gaming generation - unlike its brother in FIFA Soccer - has been far from spectacular, with the team over at EA Canada struggling to create a consistent and solid basketball gaming experience. While the series has improved every year since the disastrous NBA Live 06 on XBOX 360, it got to a point where drastic change was needed before the series’ closest competitor in the NBA 2K series moved too far ahead. Thankfully, NBA Live 10 is that drastic change. While it’s not without its problems, it’s the most original NBA Live game in years and one that should please the series’ fanboys.

FIFA 10 Review

A taste
No sporting game has evolved over the past three years as much as FIFA Soccer from EA Sports has. For a few entries it lingered behind Konami’s Pro Evolution Soccer, which offered a more realistic soccer sim experience for gamers. However, EA Sports have quickly propelled the franchise to new heights, and with FIFA 10 we get quite possibly the greatest football game ever. We were teased when Euro 2008 hit shelves, offering us a small insight into what we had coming with FIFA 09. While that game lacked the depth of a full-blown FIFA title, it set an example through the gameplay. Now the series has set a standard not only for the franchise, but also for every soccer game out there.

G-Force Review

A taste
A game based on a movie about guinea pigs saving the world. There’s no way in HELL that game could be any good. Not only is it a game based off a movie (and a pretty crappy movie at that), but it’s a movie-game on Wii, a console that is becoming more and more accustomed to shovel ware. Well, believe it or not, but G-Force is actually not all that bad. In fact, it’s actually pretty good. Reviews were scalding for the film and you can imagine how surprising it was to find how superior the game was to the actual source material. One could probably say that the movie was based off the game and not the other way around. That would actually make more sense.

Pointless but interesting fact of the week

As always there's no guarantee they are 100% accurate (after all we want interesting and pointless, not stuff we already know). Enjoy!

A duck's quack doesn't echo, and no one knows why.

The only 15 letter word that can be spelled without repeating a letter is 'uncopyrightable'.

DiRT 2 Review

A taste
The Colin McRae series has been with the Codemasters camp since 1998 when the first title was released on PC and Playstation platforms. Since then Codemasters has branched out to create a number of great racing titles, most recently Race Driver: GRID and Colin McRae Dirt, both of which struck a perfect balance between realism and arcade. Dirt 2 is ready to launch from the starting gate, but does it have enough to win the race?

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Smash Up Review

A taste
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles plus the king of (Nintendo) fighting games sounds like a fanboys dream come true. The Turtles have seen some failures recently as the comic turned cartoon series has attempted to find success in the realm of videogames. One classic that comes to mind is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Tournament Fighters, which like Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Smash-Up was inspired by another popular fighter, Street Fighter 2, when it was released on the SNES. Jump forward to the present day and Ubisoft have decided to enlist the service of a fighting series veteran, in developer Game Arts, to try and take TMNT back to its former glory.

Scribblenauts Review

A taste
Scribblenauts received unprecedented pre-release acclaim since Warner Bros. showed it off a while back. Its fan base literally grew over night after winning several “Best of…” awards at games conventions around the world and thankfully all of that gratification was justified. While Scribblenauts won’t really change the way we play games, its simplistic gameplay, fused together complex puzzles and a charming presentation, make it a game everyone should experience, no matter their age or gaming interests.

Beaterator - Initial Impressions

A taste
Rockstar’s latest offering on the PSP is both ambitious and overly complex, which ultimately helps distance itself from being a simple music game. With the developer teaming up with music producing genius Timbaland to create a large-scale version of the popular online game, Beaterator on PSP is without a doubt one of the most extensive music generators ever released on a mainstream console.

Halo 3: ODST Review

A taste
Halo 3: ODST went from being purely a scope add-on for a silencer to an all-new weapon for extra grunt. It’s difficult to determine whether or not that’s really a good thing after having played through the ODST single-player campaign, but one thing is for certain, and that is that it still maintains the Bungie accessibility and enjoyment that has made the Halo franchise what it is today. While ODST is far from perfect, it still holds up in the wake of its predecessor, offering a fun (albeit horrendously short) single-player campaign, some new multiplayer maps and the new Firefight online mode.

Professor Layton and Pandora’s Box Review

A taste
Professor Layton is back in his second western release Professor Layton & Pandora’s Box. Fans of The Curious Village have no doubt been highly anticipating the chance to have another crack at the professor’s brainteasers for the past year and a half. While the series has been an overwhelming success in Japan, it is still trying to find a break in the English speaking markets. For those who didn’t play the first game, it is essentially a series of puzzles that’ll have you racking your brain using maths and linguistic skills, along with intuition and logic to find the solution.

Up Review

A taste
Producing instant "classics" with the likes of 'Finding Nemo' and 'Cars', Pixar can scarcely put a foot wrong in the movie business and the same can be said about their most recent animated film 'Up'. As with most of the high profile Disney/Pixar films the licensing juggernaut will always guarantee a corresponding console game tie-in and in this case it is (of course) Up for the Wii.

Need for Speed SHIFT Review

A taste
The Need for Speed franchise has lost plenty of drive over the past few years. After two mediocre entries in Pro Street and Undercover condemned the brand below the likes of Midnight Club and Forza, EA decided it was about time to wipe the slate clean and start anew. After setting a standard with the great Underground titles (which took advantage of the then super-popular The Fast and The Furious movie), it seemed that each new street racing title went down a notch in quality. So it’s great that we’re seeing an all-new direction for the franchise in SHIFT, easily the best Need for Speed in years.

Written & directed by Judd Apatow, and staring Adam Sandler with Seth Rogan sounds like recipe for success. Apatow’s latest offering was always going to struggle to live up to the high expectations set by his previous work. The Beatles: Rock Band Review

A taste
This is a great addition to the Rock Band series, and truly a must have for any Beatles fan. The Beatles: Rock Band is not just a game, it is an experience. 40 years on Harmonix have developed a fantastic tribute to the world’s greatest band. It celebrates their history, and will take you on a mystical journey through the best, and some of the hidden gems, of their catalogue. The only downfall is that it’ll substantially hurt your bank account if you have to buy all the instruments and want the downloadable content. But it’s so special, we’re almost willing to overlook that.

Batman: Arkham Asylum Review

A taste
When it comes to video games, The Dark Knight has been anything but impressive. The ample supply of Batman titles from previous generations have been modest yet not-quite-conclusive stealth titles, with most going in the direction of straight beat-em-up action rather than lurking-in-the-shadows covertness. Yet despite the vigilante’s less than impressive track record, Batman: Arkham Asylum flew the hype plane right in until touchdown. Thankfully, not only does the title fully live up to that hype, but it exceeds almost every expectation, providing an uncannily dark and gothic Batman experience.

Madden NFL 10 Review

A taste
The long standing ‘Madden NFL’ gridiron series was first released way back in 1989 on Apple computers and every year since has seen a new version released. Although now retired the man behind the games name, John Madden, is a revered figure in American Pro Football circles, and along with his successful playing and coaching achievements, is perhaps best known here for his knowledgeable special comments and iconic (over) use of the telestrator during television coverage of NFL games. With such longevity it’s little wonder that the ‘Madden’ is the highest revenue generating video game series in North American history. 2009 is no different, as EA celebrates the 21st incarnation (and fourth on the Nintendo Wii), with the release of Madden NFL 10.

(500) Days of Summer Review

A taste
(500) Days of Summer is a near perfect movie that warms your heart and makes you fall in love with it. The acting, the direction, the writing, the production, the music, everything about this film is high-grade stuff. It has met my expectations and gone beyond them. It is a hyped film that actually delivered on the hype and it is the must see movie of the year. Whilst other, more complicated films released this year may be better, more meaningful, no other film released this will be as perfect. (500) Days of Summer is my favourite film of not only this year, but the whole decade.

Red Dead Redemption Preview

A Taste
Red Dead Redemption does not seem like a true sequel. If you played the original Red Dead Revolver on PS2 or XBOX, you’ll remember the simple platforming elements and mission-based structure not like we’ve seen in recent Rockstar free-roaming titles. After checking our Redemption in early form, the Red Dead name is given new life through a world that Rockstar says is the largest it’s created. Furthermore, it looks to be a far more narrative-driven game than its predecessor. There’s a strong feeling that the same old story-telling techniques of the Rockstar of old will be present, but this will undeniably be a Western adventure and not just a game set in the Wild West. Ride with us as we take a quick stroll through this Western world.

Welcome to the MyMedia Around the Network feature! Some of you may remember this as the MyMedia Community Update, and it is essentially the same thing with an emphasis on type of content rather than each site.

This will be published each Monday afternoon/evening to keep you up to date with everything that has happened across MyMedia in the past 7 days. We'll also update you on what is planned for the week ahead.

PS3 Slim 120GB Review

A taste
For months we, like so many others in the land of the Internet, speculated that Sony would either have to drop the price of the PlayStation 3, or bring out a slim model. As it so happens they did both. Without question it’s a smaller piece of hardware, but how else has Sony’s console developed?

The Oscars Change for the Better

A taste
For those that are not aware, just a few months ago it was announced that the Academy had changed its best picture nomination awards to accommodate 10 nominees. This ruling was met with both agreement from the wider film community and anger. Many believe that the new ruling will allow films like The Dark Knight to get nominated for the award. Others think that 10 films is too much, that the best picture nominees should be the crème of the crop and 5 better represents that than 10 does. Whether you do agree or disagree with the new ruling, it has little affect over the Academy or its voters.

Medals

DIY Members Medals [September]

Info
What we are doing here is allowing members to create a medal of their own choosing and set it up just like an admin would.

Here's how it will work, at the beginning of the month we'll start accepting your medal submissions, and the best submission will be run at the end of the month for every body to try and earn one just as if it were a medal run by an admin. Don't think this is like some medal suggestion thread, it's more than that it's basically another way to contribute to the site similar to submitting news, reviews etc. You will be competing against everyone else you you'll have to put in the extra effort to make your medal stand out.
