Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings - 8/10
Final Fantasy XII: Revenant Wings
Review.
Welcome back to Vaan’s world, where dreams do come true!
Ah, yes, in merely a year, Vaan has accomplished his goal of becoming the captain of his own air ship. Bully for him. And, since Square thinks he is so awesome, they have given him a sequel game; giving him some massive airship that looks like a wasp, some friends –eeg, much? – and as an added bonus, he gets to go to some world of legend, Lemures - ‘demesne of the winged ones’.
Winged ones? Oh, that actually doesn’t sound too bad! And it’s not...if Llyud – one of these ‘winged ones’, or aegyl – is anything to go by. Let’s also not forget that this game must have a plot – that being that Vaan must save the day from the Judge of Wings – some chick who wants revenge – generic Final Fantasy plot line.
And onwards we go!
Graphics – The graphics in this game are an odd thing. I’d like to say that they are good, but I can’t. I also cannot say that they are bad. They are that trippy. The graphics seem rather simplistic, but they are done in such a way that it looks really good. The colours are vibrant, and everything is clearly defined. I am severely freaked out by this, honestly. It confuses me to no end. On the world map, I cannot say they are better than average, though. The game also has cinematic cut scenes which are done very well, in a semi-cartoonish style. But honestly, some of them are really pointless. I really didn’t need to see Penelo dance for what seemed like an eternity at the time. No thanks. She was a really bad dancer, too.
Gameplay and Controls – So, we come to another part of the game that confused me. I had to THINK about what type of RPG this was. I decided on strategy. It is in real time, so, bye-bye turned based – which I love. I say it’s strategy, not because it is like Final Fantasy Tactics at all, but because you have to move around your characters, and espers – which I will explain momentarily -, in little group to fight your enemies, who move in a similar manner. You then attack them using normal attacks, magick, an ability or a quickening – which are honestly pretty awesome. You can also strengthen your espers at a summoning gate, where you can also summon more to a certain extent. An esper is a monster/thing that you can summon, at the before mentioned summoning gate that you use to fight battles with. There are many types, with strengths and weaknesses, and with time you can unlock better ones, and by defeating certain bosses ones such as Shiva and Leviathan. Awesome, right? Yes. You can’t really win without them, so I suggest that you use them. Each esper has an ability that can prove useful against enemies of the opposite type. In the game, the control pad is used for movement, the A as a confirm button and B as cancel, as usual in most games. The touch screen can be used for movement and selections, too. The X button is for the menu, which can also prove useful to select all of your units when you can’t be bothered dragging a box over them. Good for lazy people, like me. But of course, if you are having different groups, this feature is beyond useless.
Sound – Now, you all are very lucky. I very rarely have sound on while playing my DS. And this was one game that I had no idea what the music was like. I went and listened to it for you. It is rather nice, in an orchestral fashion, like most – if not all – Final Fantasy games. Clearly, the music wasn’t interesting enough for me to keep the sound on, if that is any indication of how I feel about it. Sure, it is pretty and all, but it gets a bit boring, I would say. No, it’s not bad, though. I would even call it good, just seems to make me drowsy. And that’s not what I want.
Value – This game is excellent, and addictive. It is very good fun for when you are bored and just want to sit down for a few hours. And you get to see Vaan throw a fit at Penelo because she is talking to some other guy. That makes the game especially worth it. If you want to see that, get the game. If you want to see really confusing graphics, get the game. If you aren’t into this genre, don’t get it just because I say it’s good. You probably won’t like it. Though, you are capable of making your own decisions, do what you wish. Just a note, though. The Judge of Wings is frustrating.
