Sony have announce the launch a slimmer PlayStation Portable handheld game player in September. This is in the hope that it will ignite demand and allow it to regain some of the market that it lost to the Nintendo DS. Both the PSP and the DS were released in 2004, but sales of the PSP,dispite all it's additional features , have recently been outshined by the DS. Although the new PSP looks the same as the current one when you hold it you will notice the difference. As Sony Computer Entertainment chief executive Kazuo Hirai said. "It's actually 33 per cent lighter than the current PSP. It's also 19 per cent slimmer." This announcement was made during the E3 video game exposition. The sales for the Nintendo DS were 23.6 million units in the year ended March 2007, whereas the PSP only sold 8.4 million. This has allowed Nintendo to bump Sony off the list of Japan's 10 most valuable companies. Sony do not intend to reduced the price of the new slimmer PSP leaving it at about $US170. Whereas the DS Lite, sells for $US130. This could be their big mistake. Nintendo executives have said that portable sales make up 50 per cent of its hardware sales. This just goes to show how big a market it is and how upset Sony must be that they are losing market share.
