News \ Quake Arena is coming!

John Carmack has gained the respect of the gaming community through his endeavors. Popularly known as the co-founder of id software and the lead programmer of the FPS games such as Wolfenstein 3D, Doom, and Quake, Carmack has been making waves on every system he's developed for. Now he's announced that Quake Arena will be heading to the Nintendo DS.

During his keynote speech at this year's Quake Con he gave out some details about the said project, and it was regarding the control scheme of the game. He said that he is leaning towards more traditional methods meaning it would be more like Doom and less like Metroid Prime Hunters.

Copy image location and put the image tags around it. It's just a little thing I often add to my posts when I'm expecting to be flamed for what I'm going to say.

@ desi
I doubt that they could cripple the engine any further and would expect it to be on a whole new one.

@ Eruntalon
I would be a great possibility though if we were looking at a massive full paid production team working on it. Quake2 wasn't bad. I know that because I still play it from time to time.

There was nothing wrong with Quake 2 Deathmatch, it was pretty fast-paced. I would settle for that. It's already possible to play it on homebrew DS (although I don't think it's in any playable condition i.e. severely slow FPS).

Well all we can do is wait and see, I think we are in need for a good first person shooter on the DS, I'm happy to sacrifice some graphics quality for some good game play.

What makes anyone think that the DS could possibly run the Quake3 engine? While the rumors could possibly turn out to be true I personally wouldn't expect anything too great from the DS with its 67mhz processor whereas Quake 3 requires a minimum 233-350mhz to just barely run.

Time to put on my flamesuit.

quake 3 can easily run on the nintendo ds

okay the DS is NOT a portable n64. It just gives the illusion that it is.
you can make a quake 3 for the DS just it wont be a lot like the Pc one, it will be a cut down version of it.

Dude, that's what he was saying all along. That the engine would be severely crippled.

Anyway, it probably won't be Quake as we know it. I'm counting on it being slower-paced.

The DS is as much a portable N64 as the PSP is a portable PS2 and the GBA being a portable Super Nintendo.
If anything, I'd more expect this Quake3 thing to be more like a Quake2 port with a Quake3 look thrown into it. There's still absolutely no way that I could ever see the Quake3 engine running on the DS. It uses complex shaders under OpenGL, the DS doesn't support that. Quake2 on the other hand uses both OpenGL and software based rendering so is therefore more likely what would be used.

A rather pitiful attempt by id to try and compete with Unreal Tournament if you ask me.

Quake 3 Arena sucked, and that had a keyboard and mouse. Hopes are not high.

Perhaps id should set their sights on emulating something of a lesser nature instead...

I do hope this happens, graphics wise I wouldn't expect anything to spectacular, but I hope the control system is user friendly.
