Industry tracker GfK have announced that the gaming in industry in Australia was worth $1.3 Billion up 43% on the previous year in 2007. Of the $1.3 Billion Aussie's spent almost $500 million on consoles, handhelds and peripherals while $800 million was spent of software which works out to be 15.4 million games being sold. In 2006 Aussies spent a total of $925 million on the gaming industry which was up only 7% on 2005. Ron Curry, the new CEO of local industry body the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia, suggests that the major increase in gaming sales in 2007 was due to the release on next-generation consoles and gaming being marketed to people up to 28 years old. “Last year, Australian's welcomed the arrival of the PS3 and marked a full year since the release of the Xbox 360 and Nintendo Wii. Sales figures also indicate a resurging popularity in handheld consoles with 2.3 million units of software for the Nintendo DS system purchased last year compared to the 840,000 purchased in 2006,” Curry said.
