The Release
WarCraft Tower Defense 0.5 Final was released on the 25th of Feburary 2008. It appears that the beta testing only lasted about 10 days before the final release, but I could not spot any flaws. The author Noda advised that they could not fit everything into this release like multiplay, but they are hoping to add this to the next release.



The Game
This game could easily be mistaken for a commercial game as the opening menu looks fantastic and the sounds are great. For those that have never played a form of tower defense, the rules are very simple. Build an assortment of towers generally along a path and stop the invading enemy to reach the end of the path. As you progress you are able to upgrade your towers and the opponents get stronger and quicker. You win if you can last all waves of attacks.

This version is based around the RTS game WarCraft, so the graphics and menu's will be familiar for those that have played Warcraft before.

Game Play
Noda has done a great job integrating the touchscreen on the DS. The problem he would have faced was to have both the playing field and the menu on the same screen. To have them both would have been very cramped, so the author utilized the shoulder button to swap the playing field and the menu which means you do not have to take your eyes off the one screen and it gave him two screens to work with.

I think some of the icons and descriptions could have been bigger but other than that this is very playable.

Compatibility
With the 0.5 release this version now uses DLDI so is compatible with most slot-1 and slot-2 cards. The instructions that come with the game are very good and you should have it running in minutes.

Editor
Warcraft Tower defense also comes with around 16 maps with differing goals, but if you get sick of these it also comes with its very own map editor.
As with the game the editor also comes with detailed instructions to help you customize your own map, towers, enemy, starting gold and a lot more.

Final Note
This is the best homebrew I have seen in a while and worth checking out.
