News \ Square Enix Thanks Pirate gamers for Playing FFCC

A fact of gaming in the 21st century is that there are always going to be people that wonder off into the dark corner of the Internet and illegally download games. This was the case for the recently released Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates which made it onto the net almost simultaneously to its release in stores.

After a random play time (for example 20 minutes into the game) the pirates where treated to a screen saying Thank you for playing!! which did not allow the player to advance any further. Players have the choice to go back and continue from the last save point but cunningly the message appears randomly making it impossible to predict.

It looks as if Square Enix are giving pirate gamers a taste of the game to hopefully reform their downloading ways so they will actually go out and buy it. Of Course the hackers out there will probably eventually find away around this but its good to see developers taking anti-piracy measures.

Please remember the MyDS piracy rules before commenting

It was only a matter of time. I didn't expect it to stick around for too long. But it definitely would've caught them by surprise.

It appears that this problem has been fixed. Those with an R4 can download the 1.17 version kernel which will get rid of the thank you screens. I will not be posting a link to the kernel as I do not want to even get close to breaching the rules of the site. Google is your friend.

iamtom said: That isn't actually right...they haven't stopped piracy. Simply compare it to the (J) version, adn the report months ago on a (U) Demo. :\

But that doesnt mean it's not freaking annoying.

They haven't stopped people pirating but they have really annoyed them.

If this sort of thing gets popular then it might discourage the development of flash carts even thou I only use mine for homebrew apps.

It would not be that hard to write a sub routine that examines its environment. If I am running from FAT file system I am pirated so randomly display this.

Computer geeks. They can figure anything out. Although I wouldn't have been so polite with the message....
