News \ Nintendo responds to Greenpeace report.

Nintendo is claiming that they have many measures in place to make them environmentally friendly. Neither the Wii or the DS contain dangerous material like lead, mercury or a range of other materials that are not good for the planet. The packaging has also been reviewed and the use of PVC is being phased out in favour of the use of a safer, recyclable plastic.

All products supplied world wide are designed to comply with global standards but Greenpeace's criteria is above and beyond the legislation of most country's thus giving Nintendo a lower score. The establishment of green procurement standards ensures that suppliers also supply green parts to the company.

Nintendo does not have a take back program which also reduced their Greenpeace score. The company says that they do not need a take back program as consumers hang onto their consoles and then re-sell them due to the demand of used equipment. Re-chargeable batteries can be recycled locally by the customer and other equipment will be taken back by Nintendo if you have no other means of recycling.

It appears that compared to other industry like mining, Nintendo is as green as a leprechaun with motion sickness.

well of course Nintendo are going to defend themselves...

but obviously they will make it sound like Greenpeace are nutters. Both parties are probably not entirely truthful.

Eldude said: I am sure that Greenpeace have done their job properly. Nintendo is complying to all the legislation that they need too. As I stated, Greenpeace need to concentrate on the big polluters who are not complying instead of wasting there time on those that are but are still not good enough for them.

I agree. I think it's important that everyone does their bit but there are dozens of other pollution culprits that need to be attended to first.
