THQ will announce today that the next in the series or wrestling games is coming. WWE SmackDown vs. Raw 2009 is the next in the series and will be released on all platforms except PC.

The game follows along the same story which is the road to Wrestlemania. Most of the platforms will have a new tag team feature but it appears that this was dropped for the DS version. The DS version will be an RPG style with a revamped control system. The previous version relied mostly on the stylus but the 2009 version will use the traditional d-pad grapple system and will still have some stylus interaction.

THQ is promising big surprises for the DS and have gone with a new developer Tose who works out of Japan and have a good track record of delivering great games. Other platforms are getting new features like online play and make your own finishing move features, lets see what the DS gets.

The DS version will be a free roam type game where you can go from room to room and interact with people and items. It will have a shop where you can upgrade your weapons and places to upgrade your player skills as per most RPG's. The DS will have create a superstar mode to make your own character and will feature missions to complete.

More improvements for the DS are a choice of 30 wrestlers, more match types like cage and ladder matches and the ability to move around the ring as opposed to the previous version where you had a static picture and a choice of moves. With a new AI engine this game should be a vast improvement on the last.
