I think they are a good investment for first time DS users, as you can never be too sure about how responsive the touch screen is, and you are still learning to use it. I got a pack of screen protectors when I bought mine, in fact, I waited until I had a set before opening my DS, and put them on. Two weeks later, Its all ugly and marred with many scratches (The screen protector not my screen) and I think I might get a new set while im still getting used to the functions of the DS. Im not confident enough to go without a screen protector just yet, but eventually I think I might be.
Anyway, they are fairly cheap, and a good first purchase accessory for your DS in my opinion. Just use a card like a squeegee to push out any air bubbles. When I first put mine on, I had air bubbles, hard to explain how to do it though, hopefully they have good instructions, oh, and peel it back if you cant get the air bubbles out and go slowly using the card/squeegee to push the film flat and bubble free.
