It all depends on what you want it for I guess.... If you want to run GBA games on it, then you need something like the M3 or the G6 that has the GBA cart & the PassCard to boot it up, however, if you want to use the homebrew & NDS games, but not the GBA ones, then you can go for the M3 DS Simply. The M3 DS Simply is a NDS card only that lets you plug in a MicroSD card to expand the memory. This doesn't require a GBA cart OR a PassCard as it handles the booting. The only downside is it doesn't play the GBA games.
I'm more interested in these things for the media/pda aspects, and so I've just bought the M3 DS Simply as it was considerably cheaper... $61 including postage from BambooGaming.com.
