The domain should only cost between 5 and 30 dollars a year. Depending on the name and whether it's a .com or .net etc.

The hosting is a different story but I wouldn't pay much more than 60 to 80 bucks a year. I'd want 100gig or more worth of traffic and a whole lot of tools and scripts and stat tracking options (i'd want perl, cgi and php5).

Be sure to look at the interface that they offer (c-panel for example is nice and easy to use) and make sure they have 24/7 email support and reasonable phone support.

You can get cheaper hosting from overseas (it costs a lot to transfer data to and from Australia, see) but I like that it provides employment and keeps money in the country.

I pay $15 per year for a .com domain and they have a very good basic plan that can easily accomodate any small to medium website for $11 per month, or $88 annually. 100MB space, 3GB bandwidth, 3 mailboxes, 3 databases, 3 parked domains, PHP, mySQL, Perl, CGI, SSI and a control panel with lots of features.

Oh, servers are located in Blacktown, NSW.
