R4 DS is basically the ultimate game card for DS. It allows you do download DS games from the internet, to a small micro SD card, to a DS game card.

If you google search R4DS you will see the small slit at the top of the game cart (which btw as you can see is exactly the same size as a DS cart)

Think of the R4DS like blank CD's for your DS.

I have an r4 with a 2gb micro sd card and have 23 games with plenty of space left over, and a couple of shows.. check out some other flash cards for ds 2...

not realy, you download games from websites onto your computer and then drag & drop them into a folder on your micro sd card that goes into your flash card (e.g. R4). you can also put movies, music and homebrew on it but it is a lot more complicated.
remember: do not ask where to download these games on this site because you will be banned, as it is illegal to download them.. (i found this out the hard way)

As stated above, it lets you run .nds files, may it be homebrew or downloaded games.

Although i'm not entirely forcing you to get an R4, it does do what you pretty much want it to do, however, there are many other flashcarts on the interwebs you could buy, just research the one you think is best.
Google up DSOrganize, DSNotes and Warcraft Tower Defence for the NDS for some stuff to help in the basics.

If you wanna play OTHER games like Metal Slug and other homebrew games, ditch the R4. Acekard2 is good. Some people may tell you to get an Edge card but it's just like a CycloDS but cheaper and is no longer supported (hence the low cost). So if a game doesn't work, don't expect to have any support from the Edge team to get it working.

Update what? R4's have peaked and can't make any meaningful updates. The only thing they have left is updating compatibility issues. There are cheaper cards out there that offer much more than R4 and for cheaper. The only thing that keeps people buying the product is because of its popularity, name and the fact that people don't know they can have better.
