The World Ends With You is a Square-Enix game set in modern day Tokyo. The protagonist, Neku, wakes up one morning and receives a message that he has seven days to complete a mission or he will cease to exist.

The hands-on reveals that both screens are used in combat, with the bottom screen showing Neku and the top screen showing Neku's current companion.

The stylus is used to control Neku on the touch screen.
Neku's equiped badges determine the precise touch controls required, for example, an ice badge requires a slashing motion, and a fire badge requires keeping the stylus pressed on an enemy.

The article states that the controls for Neku's partner were a "series of arrow presses", which I assume means the d-pad. Timing plays a part in performing a successful attack.

Combat is in real-time on both screens. A green glow highlights the character you're supposed to be fighting with.
