The first details of the upcoming Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown Wars have been revealed. One of the most notable announcements is that the game will not be played in the third-person perspective like the recent outings in the franchise, instead it will go back to the series roots and take a top down perspective. The game will be cel-shaded, a first for the series, and take place in Liberty City which will contain ‘different routes’ to the ones we know.
Character Movement will be controlled via the touch screen while the R button will be used to lock-on to enemies and the D-pad will be used for aiming. The mobile phone seen in GTA IV will return in the form of a PDA. Players can use this to check their email, the map, play some tunes, check their positioning and get in contact with people. The PDA will track your game statistics which will be uploaded to Rockstar’s Website. Unfortunately no other details of the online multiplayer were released.
The game has been designed for a handheld, in that it’s perfect to play on the go. Missions have been made shorter and if failed will not make the player go back to the beginning, you will be able to continue from where you left off. The wanted system has also had a make over as now you’ll be forced to disable as many police vehicles as possible. The game will be complimented with day/night and a variety of weather cycles.
To summaries GTA: Chinatown Wars will include
As we reported GTA: Chinatown Wars will be released before February 2009. If you're not familiar with the original top down GTA titles check out our GTA Series Guide.

ShuffleZ said: I can't wait for this game. Even though the top down thing has me uncertain, Rockstar should know what they're doing. This games seems mad. Play tunes through the PDA? I like the cel shaded, but I think they do that because it easier on the DS graphics.

Screenshots haven't actually been released yet (they were released to a non-Australian Magazine) so Rockstar may not be too happy if we post them, best to wait for the official release. but weve had plenty of other games and their screens and what not which "havnt been released" and from non australian magazines and websites for that matter. example: www.myds.com.au/ rockstar im pretty sure wouldnt go looking for "australian ds sites with screenshots of gta ds".. Rockstar are actually one of the biggest developers that are really strict on Australian embargo's. A lot of others don't mind so much and there's a chance they will never know, but when a bit of info about GTA got leaked Rockstar made a point to get it removed from every single Website they found it on. We also can't post screens that are watermarked, since MyDS allows user content sometimes people may do this but it should not be done. Simple solution is to wait for the release from Rockstar.
