DSi Incompatible with Current Flash Cards?

If you're into the homebrew scene you may want to think twice about purchasing a Nintendo DSi or at least keep your current DS to play all your favourite homemade creations. 10 different slot-1 flash cards have been tested on the Nintendo DSi by hacken.cc and all ten failed to be compatible.

The popular R4 flash card failed to automatically launch (which it is programed to do) and then did not appear at all in the DSi main menu. The EZ Flash V (which is not programed to auto launch) did show up in the menu, but then produced an error message when attempting to boot the card. Any solutions such as if flash card prevention can be turned off, or if firmware modifications such as FlashMe can work around the issue are yet to be determined.

The flash cards tested that failed to be compatible with the Nintendo DSi

  • R4DS
  • EZ Flash V
  • CycloDS
  • G6 DS Real
  • M3 DS Real
  • Supercard DS One
  • iTouch DS
  • FCard
  • NCard
  • M3 DS Simply
  • U2DS

The DSi Launches in Japan today, but be warned importers there is no English language option in the firmware.

It's already been tested with the CycloDS. What makes you think Edge will be any different?

Yasu has already succeeded creating a homebrew app for the DSi and it's only been a few days since its release. Although, what he's doing may not be illegal, Nintendo may be onto him.

Considering a few of the flashcarts were designed to work with the GBA slot means you could circumvent the code that might rely GBA part, and perhaps it'll work, but since N is an actual company, they most likely would've thought of that. What I'm saying here is that the DSi might block the carts because the GBA slot is replaced with a chip which has instructions to block it.

I bet you, in under 2 years, if the DSi is not outphased, a decently working flashcart will be available.

I never commented on what was annoying about it, I was saying how people would get past it eventually.
Looking at the speed of the development of the first DS flash-carts and the need to Flash the DS itself, that was from scratch and it took about 2 years for a smoothly working function to happen. Considering no-one would be in their right mind to stuff their DSi firmware up, that would force people to just open it, and find what makes it incompatible.

What I'm thinking would happen: Essentially modchipping the console itself, UNLESS Nintendo pretty much made the basic of the DSi to be flashcart compatible, and perhaps it's a chip with the extra instructions, either removal of the chip in question, or change to a different piece. Or perhaps some various other form of modification. But why bother, the DSi is pretty much a gimmick, I recall one of the statements answering the reason to the 0.3mpx camera size is supported by 11 filters, making it not so useless. The fact that it can only play a certain range of DS games also brings it away from the Gameboy style series(No GBA slot).

DSi is very gimmicky though, 3kpx camera (or 0.3mpx) and 11 "filters", not to mention the sound manipulation for pitch/speed.

Considering Aus isn't getting it until late 2009 or thereabouts, they'd most likely have a basic flashcart made for it.

I bet there will be next to no DSi only games, sure a few will come out at first but then hardly any as they won't want to risk limiting software sales considering the DS/DS Lite have outsold the GBA now.

true that.. i personally think the dsi will fall hard.. i wont be getting one unless a dsi exclusive zelda comes out. that will be the only reason id buy it. but i highly doubt that will happen.

Yep Aussie games will work on it, but you'll only be able to download Japanese DSWare games. I also believe from current reports there's no English option for the menu.

Um actually, when dsi exclusive games (games that are made for the dsi, not the ds) come out, they will also be region locked. so you can't play dsi games from here, but you can play normal (current) ds games.

Watch all the cry babies on gbatemp.net!

They praise the flash card and bash Nintendo.

EDIT: I love this comment... along with all the subsequent bashings.
"Can piracy EVER happen with the DSi? What will we do now? I THINK NINTENDO HAS OUTSMARTED US ALL!!!!"

"Nintendo outsmarted you with every system they have ever created. You're not the one enabling homebrew. You are insignificant like the rest of us. Get over it, shut the **** up, crawl back into bed, and wait until we know if homebrew is possible or not. You will be told, you will not ask."
