Neither the M3/R4 or CycloDs evo can play .avi/mpeg files. I believe a couple of Slot 2 carts may do. Theres a general consenses the DS isn't powerful enough processor and hardware wise to play these formats. Two more compressed formats, the highly compressed .dpg (Used by homebrew app Moonshell) & .dsm (Used by DSMplay) can play converted video. There are numberous MP3 programs. No software is required as both carts update from a file you download and place on your micro sd card. There are however a bunch of free applications around to help optimize and organise the data on the carts. Also in addition to the carts you need at least 1 microsd card to store data for the flashcart.
Other notable free homebrew programs include an MSN client (BeUp), an Organiser (DSorganise), Music sampler/sequencer app (Nitrotracker), Painting Programs (Colours, Phidias), DSlinux, Email client (NDSmail), remote windows controler (WINDS) , emulators for NES, SNES,Gameboy, Sega Master System/Megadrive, Commodore64, Atari and ports of shareware Doom, Wolf 3d, Quake, Descent, etc.
It's a fun world, puts your ds to good use realy.
