Hardware \ R4 1.11 update...stupid question

I know I'm probably doing something stupid, seeing as I don't really know what I'm doing...but anyway...I've spent hours on google/forums and still don't have an answer.

I've just updated to the english v1.11...from the official site, copied all files (including system, is that the right thing to do?)
but when I start the DS a screen appears in chinese (I think) and nothing else happens.
So am I doing something stupid, or is there some patch I should use?

You sure you downloaded the the English version, I've noticed that they clump all different language versions together, could have been easy to accidentally clicked on the wrong one.

yeah copy everything and make sure you overwrite old files sorry but I have never had that problem

Or would it be obvious I had a Chinese one from the start? (I know, more stupid questions...but stupid people wanna know and I'm running out of ideas)

Quite possible you have a Chinese R4. The error message you're getting is probably to tell you that you've installed the wrong firmware. Try installing the Chinese firmware.

Games, homebrew and stuff should still display in English.

Thanks Desi, I think you're right, though I tried updating to the Korean 1.11 (I thought it was a Chinese error message I was getting, but apparently not) and had the same problem. I think I'll go back to the shop on Monday and see what they say.
So Dante and Iamtom....you mean you have better ways to spend a saturday than freaking out about your unusable DS and spending hours online looking for answers? hmmm interesting...

edit...ok it's all fixed...it was a Chinese r4 after all (I was never good at languages, even English), and after finding the Chinese kernal (not on the official site) all's well.
