I am under the impression that the PSP is equivalent to the PS2 console and that the DS is the equivalent to the Game Cube in processing power, graphics etc in general terms.

Any comments?

I have a DS Lite and I am thinking of purchasing a PSP as well.

I would class the DS graphics as a bit above N64 graphics, getting a PSP would give you more variety in game choice and you would have a portable media centre.

I have purchased a Final Fantasy Crisis Core Limited edition PSP for $510!!

I know it is expensive. I will play the best games on each system (excluding racing games).

LOL

1. psp's have really crappy games my mate dosnt play games on his cos theres such a **** selection he just uses it for music and vids

2. ds's have worse graphics than a n64
if they did dont cha think ninty would be making BILLIONS of a oot port?

they had to lower sm64's graphics to get it to play on the ds

ds is like a portable super nintendo with 3d graphics and a touch screen

Keep in mind part of the limitations on the N64 was the available cartridge memory, lots of textures were stretched or lowered to fit them on. The DS has a lot more space per cartridge to provide richer textures. So in a way it is a superior graphical experience, but you still have a lot of limitations on poly counts and so on

True, think of Mario Kart on the N64 and then think of Mario Kart DS, now easily the DS version looks better, and Super Mario 64 compared to Super Mario 64 DS, IMO again the DS version looks better, so in reality most DS games have either the same quality of graphics or better, the only exception is FPS, it would be good if they could make them look like Goldeneye, but so far its looking like they wont be able to.

So overall, most DS games either have the same quality of graphics or better, its only the FPS games on the DS that need some work.

Yeah they are mate, but still not up to what they should be, if they make an FPS that looks as good quality as Goldeneye, i will congratulate them

Or they could just put Goldeneye straight on here

But that wouln't happen with all the things that have happened in the past few years.

I've had my PSP for a while, and have to agree and say that I use it more for media than games at the moment... the majority of games for the PSP and what I feel are 'in-depth' games - games you gotta sit down and play in a dedicated gaming session - whereas with the DS you can play a quick bit and then get back to work after your lunch break, or on the way to work on the train, or while you're on the phone to an irritating client...

It depends on what games you are playing. LCS? Yes that was a terrible game and requires long sessions. Ridge Racer? Pick it up, play a race, then put it away again.

DS Lites are very powerful for a Nintendo Handheld. But the power of the PSP is unreal.

In hardware Terms the DS is more powerfull than an N64, and the PSP is a bit better than a PS2

Lol might want to check that
Like I was saying above, overall storage memory plays a huge part in what you can do. If storage had cost what it does now back then, the N64 would have been all over the DS.

For anyone technically minded, here are the specs of both copied from a forum.

Random forum guy somewhere said:

Nintendo DS:

Main CPU: ARM 9, 67 MHz
Secondary CPU: ARM 7, 33 MHz

Memory: 4 MB main RAM, 656 kB VRAM

Sound: ARM 7, 33 MHz
16 simultaneous channels
stereo sound

Graphical prestations/effects:
ARM 9
dual 256x192 screen resolution
solid 60fps
120,000 polygons per second with all hardware effects @ 60 fps (expect game benchmarks to be a little less.)
262,144 colors
4 million vertices/second
30 million pixels/second fillrate
Cel-shading
Hardware fog
no bilinear filtering This really sucks...

Random forum guy somewhere said:

Nintendo 64:

Main CPU: R4000, 93.75 MHz
Secondary CPU: <unknown name>, 62.5 MHz

RAM: 36 Mb (4.5MB) main RAM, 8.5MB with expansion pak

Sound: <the unknown CPU>, 62.5 MHz
16-24 channels OR
max. 100 simultaneous channels, though take 1% of the CPU each (developer's choice)
Dolby Pro Logic (1, not 2) Surround sound

Graphical prestations/effects:
<the CPU w/o name>
256x224 or 640x480 screen resolution
lots of graphical sacrifice needed for a solid 60fps (like F-Zero X)
32,000 colors on-screen
150,000 polygons with all effects @ 60 fps (Nintendo says)
100,000 " " " " " " (benchmark says)
unknown vertices and fillrate
hardware fog, bi- and trilinear filtering

PS: Because the screen on the DS is small the Ds can get away with more. Basically the small screen will let them do less and it appear as more.

So there you go

Crap, I just accidentally deleted someones post when going to quote them, sorry to whoever was making the comparison between mario kart 64 and ds.

That person who I just accidentally deletedsaid:Mario Kart 64 looked like everything was paper cut outs (or something to that effect)

They basically were, pretty much everything in that game that wasn't track or a huge falling boulder was a sprite, a 2D object cycling between different picture angles depending on where you were in relation to it. If you stopped the cycling it would , mario in his kart would literally be a 2D flat object.

It was too short to be a console game and too stupid to make it as a portable game. So therefore, it sucked.

Back on track here. The Game Cube was the most underutilised console I have ever seen games come out onto. While it contained much greater power then the PS2, the game developers never applied themselves, since the majority of games aren't focussed towards serious gamers. I feared that something similar would happen with the Wii, and in some games it shows but in other more serious franchises they really pushed it to the limit.

It appears from the above stats that the DS, while containing less powerful hardware (for the likely reason of preserving battery power) then the N64, would have better looking games for for the sake of developers been open to more advanced technology that allow them to make everything look better for the unit itself.
