I have not used the USB adapter but I get about 5-10 meters to an access point and about 10-15 meters DS to DS.
The WEP encryption shortens the distance for the connection to AP.

Well it seems to work at the other end of our house for my DS, which is about 15m and through about 4 walls, though i did soft mod it so its like a normal soft access point, never really tried it when it was just ninty software running but i dont think it made much of a difference.
