Good choice on getting a car, you will never know how you did without one before. The freedom, independence, and your wallet sighing when you pull up to the petrol pumps.
Motorbikes would be more fuel efficient, but I drive on the roads and there are that many idiot drivers out there, who fail to signal, fail to headcheck, and basically would have their license stripped from them if I were a traffic cop, it would be better to have several years driving experience before tackling a bike on the roads these days.
As long as you get a good driving instructor who can not only get you ready to pass the test, but get you ready for a lifetime of safe motoring, you will be fine. Oh, and try to get a manual license, a bit more work, but it means you can drive any old junker.
Also dont forget insurance, hey, all this nagging, I probably sound like your parents >_< Ahem, P-S-3!!! P-S-3!!! (Runs off chanting)
