I bought a multicard reader for about $15 at Ted's camera store. It does SmartMedia, xd, SD, MMC, MD and CF. The only one missing off the top of my head is SDHC and maybe the Sony cards - forget what they're called.
It's not fast or flash, but it gets the job done.
Oh, and they had other more expensive readers, plus more specialised ones that only did a couple of formats. I'd expect there'd be SDHC etc available in one of those.
