Nintendo Wi-Fi \ Notebook with wifi

My brother just bought a notebook from WOW for uni and on the back it says "wifi certified" Now I don't have wifi yet (no usb or router) So I was wondering what these words mean. Can I play my wifi without the usb through the laptop? or do I still need to get a usb or wireless router.

p.s the laptop does not have a wireless router.

turn on the wifi on the laptop and you might be able to pick up some wireless networks around your house if there are any set up.

you may even be able to connect to them if they are stupid enough to leave it unsecured. but this would mean your stealing their internets, so i'd think about it first.
