All earphones (within reason) really sound the same unless you're an audiophile or you've bought particularly cheap headphones. I use Sony earbud headphones (the neck-chain kind) if I must use headphones. About $20-25 from most stores.

The few times I've listened to the DS with headphones I've always used the ones I got with my mp3 player, and they work pretty much as well as the DS speakers.
