Space Invades Revolution!!!! - 9/10

While looking through the games section of this site, this little baby popped up. My first retro gamer reaction was... I have to get this.

Game Modes
After inserting your coin into the machine you are then presented with 3 options, CLASSIC Ver, NEW AGE Ver and options.

 •  Classic Version.
The version licensed to Nintendo is not actually the first one to be released. This version is in colour and I distinctly remember playing this in black and white at the pinnies. I did play this version in the arcade as well and the DS version is a superb replication.

As we all know you start off with 55 enemy above you moving left and right in sync while dropping bombs on you. Your only protection is four barriers to hide under which soon get blown away. As you progress the enemy gets lower and lower but do not let them get to the bottom of the screen or it is game over for you. To earn extra points shoot the UFO which flies over head occasionally. Once the screen is clear of invaders, you have finished the level. As the levels go on the enemy starts lower on the screen and move faster and faster.

You can play this game as it was intended but you can also use a couple of added features. On the touch screen you have an auto fire option which you can switch off and on during game play and there is also a targeting system for the UFO which can be enabled or disabled.



 • New Version.
In this version you get a new improved fighter that flies out of its hanger at the start of each mission. This fighter seems to move faster and definitely fires more quickly than the standard.

You are presented with a map of the world and asked to select a location. Each location will give you a challenge based around the Space Invaders game. Challenges vary from one on one battles with the old spaceship to fighting smaller quantities of invaders in smaller environments or fighting one big invader, plus a whole lot more. Each level has 3 rounds which you need to pass to win the level. There are 20 locations to choose from which are opened up as you progress through the lower levels.



 • Options.
Just two Options.
1. “Extend” This option allows you to change at what score you receive an extra ship. 1000 or 1500
2. “Stock” This option allows you to change the default setting of 3 space ships at the start of a game to five or six..

Game Play.
There are two ways to control your spaceship. Firstly with the game pad which works exceptionally well and is very responsive. This is my preferred method for playing this on the DS. The second way is to use the stylus on the touchpad to move the joystick and push the fire button. Playing with the stylus just felt so broken and I do not recommend it.

Playing the classic version was a lot harder than I remember and I really had to concentrate to avoid being bombed. Using the new ship did make things easier in the new version but the challenges can be tough. The only thing I did not like about the game is that the enemy colud go further left or right than you in the NEW version taking them out of shooting range. This became annoying.

Conclusion.
Of course I loved it, being a retro gamer from long back.
I could not fault the port of this game as it was true to the original and the added features and New version will give you even longer game play. I just keep picking this one up.

Graphics - 7/10 (only because it is old)
Gameplay - 9/10
Sound - 7/10 (only because it is old)
