Hardware \ DSX vs R4DS

Guyver says:

Which of these is better to use for media applications, I want to use it for MP3's and videos, at the moment i'm using the Nintendo MP3 player and it's good but it has it's limmits. Which one of these is more user friendly because i'm not a real computer wizz and the websites I have visited that sell these don't give much detail on what video format is compatible.
Any help would be appreciated and I hope I am allowed to discuss this.

You are allowed to discuss this. We have not formed a policy against it, at least not yet.

Both are easy to use (they are both drag-and-drop), but the DS-X is crazy expensive and uses built-in flash memory. The R4DS is cheap and uses MicroSD cards, so you could have several MicroSD cards, like one full of music and a few others full of movies. Price and storage medium are why I recommend the R4DS.

You can play MP3 files as-is with several Homebrew apps (I use LMP-NG). Just put them on the storage medium and run them with your app.

To play videos you will need to convert them to a readable format. The most common is .dpg. An episode of South Park or The Simpsons, when recompiled as .dpg, weighs 50-60MB.

Use a program called BatchDPG, because the DPG converter that comes with Moonshell freezes an awful lot.

Really? I thought we weren't allowed to discuss it.

desi says:

No, we are not allowed to sell it. The entire problem came from a Modchip being for sale on MyGames. Nothing to do with mere discussion.

Djinni says:

So were just not allowed to sell them. Ok thats reasonable. It could become a big problem if we were allowed to sell it.

EDIT: desi theres nothing wrong with posting alot is there? Its just that people are saying that I shouldnt post as much as I do.

I like the DS-X. It's got the better looking aplication with inbuilt MP3 support, also had no problems running any Homebrew on it or Wi-FI compatibility. I feel it's the simpler of the two to use, just plug and play with USB. Of coure 512 meg doesn't hold as much, there is a 4 gigbyte one soon to be released, if money isn't the objective, its an almost perfect tool, anyway the R4 also sounds quite good, I suggest googling for reviews of both.

Are they just extra hardware for your DS?

desi says:

Yes, they are Flash Carts. Have a look at our Guide to Homebrew.

Looks like the R4DS is the winner, I like the option of the SD cards and on Ebay they sell them as a package R4DS + SD card, If I get stuck I might have to bother you Desi with some stupid questions

I have the R4DS (which is basically the same as the M3 Simply). My mate bought 2 as well. It works well, had no problems with it.

I bought mine from the guy who runs that site, back when eBay hadn't kicked him yet.

You'll find that he's one of, like, two (if I remember correctly) official R4DS distributors in Australia, so they are genuine products.

I just orded the R4DS, plus you never no when you might want to use the GBA slot for something else, like the web browser or rumble pak.

What are you talking about? The M3 Simply is an R4DS, relabelled and modified so that it cannot run R4 updates. When the R4DS gets a firmware upgrade, it takes weeks for the M3 Team to reprogram it for use on an M3 Simply. The two are functionally identical, except for the firmware lag with the Simply.

The 'extra storage' you're talking about is a function to make the Cart act as a NoPass so that a Slot 2 Flash Cart can run DS ROMs. Slot 2 carts have worse DS compatibility than Slot 1. This is, duh, also available on the R4DS.

Check your facts.
