Nintendo Australia's Managing Director, Rose Lappin answered some questions that are often thrown Nintendo’s way from an Australian point of view in a recent interview with Screen Play.
Nintendo are happy to look at any Nintendo DS console suffering from the cracked hinges problem regardless of the consoles age.
”Whether it has been dropped or not, we can certainly have a look at it. We are most happy to assist any unit that has a cracked hinge and repair where necessary.
The Wii console costs $270 in the US and $400 in Australia, Lappin says this “ relates to most things in the US compared to Australia, we make our pricing decisions based on the price we purchase for from Japan.”
Games are delayed for months due to translation, which may be the case for Europe but why should Australia be forced to wait the same amount of time when we only need English? It all comes down to regions, we are a PAL region, as is Europe but Nintendo assure is that
“We [Nintendo] are always working towards closer release dates for the fans, as we understand their frustration at waiting for titles.”
One hot topic of discussion is the Wii’s limited online capabilities compared to those of other consoles such as the lack of downloadable content. When asked about this and the ability to send messages to other Wii owners being such as hassle Lappin replied
“
What we do have available at this stage for online gaming is Mario Kart Wii, and coming out June 26, Super Smash Bros. Brawl. In terms of downloadable content, we also have the various Wii Channels that are available including Mii Channel, Everybody Votes Channel, News Channel, Forecast Channel, Wii Shop Channel, Internet Channel, Photo Channel, Nintendo Channel and Mii Contest Channel; as well as Virtual Console, for classic game downloads, and now WiiWare for new downloads.
In reference to the system for sending messages, the Wii Message Board, we haven't had any feedback on it being difficult to use. But of course if any users are having difficulty please contact our Customer Support Centre, or visit here, which guides you through how to access it.
When asked about the Wii heating up when being left on standby mode the Nintendo Director said
“I have spoken to our service area, and they are certainly not aware of any issues with burnt hardware boards from units being left on standby. So I can't see any reason to switch the unit off. If there is anyone that has issues with this, please let our service department know, which can be done by calling (03) 9730 9822.
Well over a year into the consoles life gamers are still finding it painfully hard to get their hands on a Wii Remote, Ms.Lappin said
“Honestly, we didn't order enough, but we realised it after we launched Mario Kart Wii. The demand has outstripped supply because the Wii has been so popular globally. This has put a really high demand on not only hardware but accessories as well.
The take up on Wii accessories has been higher than for any other console. But we have some really good numbers coming through on all the Wii accessories in the coming months.
Nintendo also apologised for people being forced to wait on hold when phoning Nintendo Australia. They have promised that as of the middle of June 2008 that they will double their phone lines so you can spend less time on hold and more time gaming. This all comes as good news for Australia as it appears that Rose Lappin is determined for the Australian branch of the Japanese based company to listen to the questions of locals and assist them as best they can.
