News \ Sony Granted Patent for Handheld Touchscreen

Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) successfully had a patent granted for a "handheld device with touchscreen and digital tactile pixels". While this suggests a 'PSP 2.0' could be in the works following in the footsteps of the Nintendo DS it is important to note that Sony have a handful of patents up their selves. SCEA has also registered patents for a handheld phone, portable media player, email device, web browser device or navigation device all of which are yet to see the light of day. On the other hand the Nintendo DS has seen immense success with it's touch controls allowing anyone the option to pick up and play, perhaps Sony now believe touching is good.

On a side note the patent lists former Sony executive Phil Harrison as the inventor. Harrison left Sony earlier this year to become director at Infogrames, although the patent was filled back in January 2008.

I would only see something like this, if it ever came out, to be released only in Japan as that is the only place it is seeing good sales having beat the DS and Wii in sales for the past couple of months and Sony wouldn't be able to achieve what the DS has achieved
