The DS Lite, is smaller, lighter, brighter screen, longer battery life and there's more accessories available that are DS lite specific, but for generally playing games they both do the same thing.
You do need a WiFi USB connector or wireless router to play Mario Kart on-line.

Actually, disagree.

Before you buy a router, check Nintendo's compatible router list at www.nintendowifi.com.au/

The DS can't work with some routers (like the D-Link DI-524 I have).
