It takes a little bit of effort, but as the nintendo usb adapter is made by BUFFALO, it can be reconfigured to run as a regular wifi adapter using a different (Buffalo) driver than the Nintendo software that comes with it.

How do I know it works... Well It wasn't the simplest thing in the world to configure, but works great for me and runs for regulare wi-fi as well as homebrew wi-fi.
