Hardware \ Are there such things as DS Shell Customisation Kits?

I was wondering, because I am really interested at making my own unique shell. If I did it on my own, what would be the right substance to properly apply colours to the DS, as in would usual paints and swatches damage the internals if I try and paint the shell myself?

Well your not the first person that has ventured down the path of modifying a DS, there's a few exaple in this news article here www.myds.com.au/
As for painting it, it should be fine as long as you completely strip down the DS and not paint any of the electrical components, and I would suggest that you look into which paint would suit plastic, to ensure none of the paint flakes off.

Ah, I see, been done before, oh well, that much is expected, I shall check out the ArtSmart store up my road and see if they recommend anything, also, if you say don't paint electrical components, what should I do about painting the parts that are close to the speakers, I mean, would paint even be able to go in there? If it did, what do you think would happen...explosion?

If paint got onto a speaker I say it will just damage it over time and muffle the sound being emitted from it. I've never pulled one apart myself but judging from these pictures of replacement parts www.myds.com.au/ I would say that you can separate the speaker from the case.
Painting onto plastic usually requires a plastic primer(I'm just using painting car parts as a reference here) but you might be able to find a paint that will bond to plastic well at your local hobby shop, see how you go. All I could suggest is do your research first and take your time when doing this project.
