Yeah it's good to see new games based on the Final fantasy Style of Gaming.

Well that's the thing, it's bares very little resemblance to FF on a combat level. The core combat controls, you're actually controlling two people, one using the touch screen in a very action orientated way, and the other in something more like DDR. You've still got a lot of RPG concepts from FF (or any other RPG for that matter) in terms of items and stats, but for the most part it really feels like a built from the ground up experience.

Well that's the thing, you can't really put it into those terms, it's really unique in that respect.
Basically you have a traditional 'field' mode, where you explore the incredibly stylized city (it looks SO good), where you can talk to people, go to shops and such. The on screen population is huge, with some 30 or 40 people being on screen in some cases. Shibuya feels a lot more alive than most real time worlds on console games.
When you go into combat, it consumes both screens. Both screens will have the same monsters but only one of the two characters on each. The concept behind this is that you're both fighting the same monsters, but the battle happens on different levels of reality (or something to that effect).
The bottom screen has Neku, the main character, and is all touch screen controls. You can give him certain attacks and powers (through the pin system, like weapons and items if you wanted to compare it to FF), and they're used with various on screen gestures in real time. You can also move him around with the stylus.
On the top screen you have Shiki, Neku's partner, who is controlled SIMULTANEOUSLY using the D pad to issue commands. It will come up with a display showing you the button

It will come up with a display showing you the button paths to various actions, and you have to follow it through in a DDR style motion of direction pressing.
So basically you're controlling two characters at once, they don't take turns or anything like that, you are literally issuing commands at the same time for both.
I think it's really fun and exciting, but it also comes with a whole lot of controls if it gets too much for you. If you stop controlling your top screen character, after about 5 seconds the CPU will take over control, but it does the commands slower than you can. If you want to start doing the D-Pad controls again, just start pushing buttons and it'll instantly switch command back to you.
Within the games options you've also got settings for how quickly to take over, or to not take over at all. You can also adjust game difficulty on the fly, but unlike a lot of games, this will result in less XP and items being dropped.

It really is, so many games on the DS are either trying to be console games or are so ridiculously gimmicky. The World Ends With You kinda just goes 'screw you guys, we're doing our own thing'

I tend to micro-focus. When I play FPS I forget about the stuff in the corners, like health, maps, etc. So I can see myself having difficulty trying to pay attention to both screens. Won't stop me playing, of course.
I just started playing this and I must say very impressive.

Our Ubisoft guy was explaining the combat system to me (i still hadn't seen the game in action) and I was just like 'whaaaaaa' at the dual screen stuff, I think I may have even said 'whats the point of the second screen if the CPU can do it'. But when you see it in action its just addictive lol

Don't stress, the game continues to work in real time when you're not playing, so when you play next your pins will have leveled a bit
