Or... I just need to find a website that host websites, like freewebs. But be able to customise the website a lot more, just to test it out.

If your site has a control panel, you can usually add a blog package and it will install it all for you. You just need to then go in as admin and adjust settings. I played around with this on a couple of hosts and it works well.

I tried that at first. It hurts to try to read someone else's code, and it hurts that you're going through all the trouble of learning a programming language anyway, and you may as well make the software exactly as you want it.

You don't have to be! Once you have a solid grounding in (X)HTML, Larry Ullman's "PHP and mySQL for Dynamic Websites" and the downloadable PHP and mySQL manuals (in .chm format) is all you need.

You need a host that lets you build a database too, of course, but you can find some free hosts who give you a database too, if you don't buy hosting already.
