No, you have a grid of nine squares by nine. You must place the numbers 1–9 in each square, but each vertical and horizontal line must have only one occurence of each number.
Also, the grid is divided into nine larger cells (three rows of three squares — each cell containing nine squares), and the numbers 1-9 may only occur once each in that entire cell.
