the edge can handle 8 gig I assume other new ones can as well.

The sizes are always in powers of 2 and up to 128 meg.
2GB is sufficient if you are going to play a game, complete it, delete it (and preserve the save file). Not good enough if you know you're going to store other stuff in it like media and homebrew.
