Orcs & Elves... or just pixels!? - 7/10
Doom took the world by storm and is still spoken of in reverential tones and often fired up on computers with nostalgic glee... so it should come as no surprise that it hasn't been too long before a Doom clone hits the DS in the form of this title.
Orcs & Elves presents a fairly basic story line: the stronghold has been overrun by orcs and - you guessed it! - you have to save the day... with your talking wand. Okaaaaaay... forget that piece of nonsense for a minute because it gets even more barmy: when you find a blue fire you can jump into it to get teleported to the lair of a friendly dragon that will upgrade your weapons and armour (and transport you to various other parts of the underground stronghold) in exchange for gems... how kind!
So the plot isn't exactly going to win any prizes for either originality or making much sense, but what about the game?
Well, it's not bad... but it's not that good either. Those wanting a simple FPS dungeon crawl will enjoy it for what it is, but the pixelated enemies will annoy most players expecting their piece of handheld goodness to be pushed to the technological extreme. There is no excuse for these graphics when you look at what is possible in other titles, and the game has a rushed, haphazard feel to it.
Overall, I'd say it will fill a few spare minutes here and there but won't be breaking any new ground or making any new fans.
