Scrabble 2007 - Get all wordy - 7/10

Who hasn't felt the pleasure of either:
a) clicking down all seven of their tiles to make a word of such dazzlingly huge point-proportions that it has been talked about for days aftwerwards, or
b) sticking a Scrabble tile up their nose?

Well, at last all that wordy goodness can be yours - and in the palm of your hand too! - except without the nasal complications.
Scrabble for the DS is everything you might expect... but it doesn't quite deliver.
Yes, the dictionary is large, the AI is smart enough to prevent a serious challenge, the board is colourful and the stylus and touchscreen are intuitive and immediately accessible to anybody with even the most rudimentary understanding of the game.
However, what is lacking is simply attention to detail and that extra bit of sparkle that might have turned this game from a mere reason to celebrate by fans of the boardgame and crosswords and words in general, to a true crowd pleaser.
The coloured tiles on the board that give the player those all-important double and triple letter and word scores are simply that - coloured tiles - and the unitiated player will simply know they signify they some bit of point-related bonus without knowing exactly what - there is simply no way to tell what each different colour means by looking at the board because there is no marking of any sort.
Apart from that the game is perfectly serviceable, but that is what I find - as a Scrabble fan - so disappointing. Given the hardware present, a cutscene when a particularly impressive score was achieved, a bit of fanfare when a triple word score was clicked into place, or even simply a bit of banter from the opposing player... anything! There is simply nothing 'extra' to pull this title from the realms of simply good to being the brilliant game it might have been.
