New! Super Mario Bros. - 9/10
Review by Dave Cage
Introduction
In 2006 Nintendo released a follow up to the last Super Mario Bros. Game, and they hoped that with the added capabilities of the DS as a then New platform that it would sell a few units and that it would help the DS really establish itself, fast-forward 3 years since its release and just last week they where advertising a “Limited” Mario DS with New Super Mario Bros. so this game has either stood the test of time, or they are desperately trying to get rid of the stock that they have well if you don’t know the answer then clearly you have never put the New Super Mario Bros. cartridge into your DS and had a go with it, to make sure that this review was accurate and up to date and that my views on it hadn’t changed I re-started it this morning, and I have been playing ever since
Controls: 9/10
The controls are the same as they have been through the rest of the series, not a lot has changed here, but why fix what isn’t broken?, the game makes use of the touch screen in small doses (which isn’t necessarily a bad thing) the use of the touchscreen is limited to use in the menu (although this can also be done with the D-Pad) and moving around the different worlds (could be possible to do this another way but I haven’t found it)
Graphics: 9/10
The graphics of this game are smooth and crisp but really what else can we expect from Nintendo on there own console, this game has vibrant colors that make the level seem lighthearted and they have continued the theme of the castles that bowser is in, with the lava and everything else from previous entrys in the series
Sound: 9/10
The sound of the game hasn’t really been changed from the older games the sound bits are a little more advanved but they have the same basic premise to them, the sound is played in stereo through the console where enabled, which is a great touch and you can notice it when gaming, for example when Mario come out of a pipe on the left side of the screen the sound effect is played from the left speaker
Gameplay: 8.5/10
The gameplay of the game is much like the others, and veterans to the series will not be lost here, they will know the basic premise, the gameplay can get a bit stale at times and a few of the other people I have talked to about this game find it better the enjoy this game in bursts, which is where one weakness of the game shows through, the last of a save feature, the game will give you an option to save after each castle or when you purchase access to an extra area, but if you need to turn the console off to return to work or school depending on where you are and how old you are, you would have to make it to the next castle or have enough of the big coins to cash in for the path to another area of the map, the new feature of the supersized Mario is a lot of fun, it is enjoyable to see the world and the items crumble under the force of Mario
Multiplayer: N/A
As I don’t have anyone living near me at the time I write this review that has the game I was unable to test this feature therefore the game wasn’t scored on it, I’m hoping in the near future to be able to update this review with a detailed breakdown of multiplayer but from a quick look at the menu it seems to be like older games in the series, compete to see who can score higher in the level, pretty easy stuff and could add to the life of the game if you have a friend to play it with
Overall: 9/10
In closing the game is a great game for the Nintendo Handheld, and it is a perfect addition to anyone’s game collection, and well worth every dollar your local retailer has it selling for, if your looking for a fun DS game that can be challenging at times but can also just be a good game for a bit of fun then this is the game for you, if your looking for a touch screen heavy game then it probably isn’t for you
