Diddy Kong Racing DS - 7/10

A DS adaptation of the original N64 game. Let's see how it fares, shall we?
I haven't played this game in a long time, bare with me.
Story:
Not much of a story line here, basically all you do is race - which is the point of the game. I don't suppose it needs to be dragged down with one of those 'plots'. What I have gathered though is that this Wizpig fellow has taken over an island and it is up to me to save it. Yeah, by driving a car. Or plane. Or hovercraft, for that matter. Yippee! I'm pretty sure that there are people locked behind doors, too. I suppose I have to rescue them, also. Basically you unlock new races and locations by collecting balloons.
Characters:
Never before have the actual characters annoyed me so much. This fat elephant thing named Taj - who can surprisingly fly on a carpet -, is officially my least liked character EVER. Other than Peach in Mario Kart 64. He makes the weirdest noises and uses cliche 'magic' words. Couldn't he unlock the doors for me? Like 'Open Sesame'? He even calls his own home mystical. I was tempted to run him over with my car. Oh wait! My car is too small to do that! Let's get some hummers, please? Still, I owned him in that race. But all I got was a stinking balloon - But, wait, turns out I need that. These characters are no where near as good as the ones in Mario Kart and Crash Bandicoot. Also, the villain is a bit sketchy. Bowzer could smash 'im.
I hate him - Hate him with me. ---- Bowzer is way cooler
Graphics:
Yeah, I think the graphic are pretty darn good for a DS game. Things generally look like they should. And the colours are very nice. At least my eyes don't hurt after I've played it. Unless that eyesore, Taj, comes on screen. It looks like things are moving, too...like those delightful little waterfalls ^^. The graphics are lovely, and that is really just about all I can say.
Gameplay and Controls:
Gameplay in Diddy Kong Racing is easy and enjoyable, same goes for controls. The controls are basically the same as the original game. Using only the directional pad and button A, B, X and Y frequently. A is for accelerate and then you choose which way you want to go. Simple! Like most racing games, Diddy Kong Racing is addictive and very easy to catch on to. You can play it for days without getting bored. Such is the fool proof idea of racing games.
Music:
The music is okay, but the somewhat monotone and repetitive tunes can get irritating. It makes me want to turn the sound off. Which I usually do anyway. There are voices in this game, I realised for the first time - and sounds of nature, such as frogs. Taj, can talk unfortunately. He sounds like one of those narrators for a childrens show. With a really sucky accent, too. I hate it -.- If you ignore Taj, it's all good, though.
Overall a very enjoyable game. I recommend it to anyone who wants to try a game of this genre. Or if you are a fan of Mario Kart. And now for some scores.
