According to CVG The Pokemon Company, the developer behind the handheld RPG games, is the first studio to receive a development kit for the successor to the DS.
Known currently as the "DS 2", at least on the Internet, the developer claims Nintendo has only created the first build of what will become the final console. At this stage we don't have any confirmation that a DS 2 is in development, or that it's actually a successor to the DS and not just another upgrade. However, it seems unlikely that Nintendo would revise the DS again, and if a new development kit is required that suggests completely new hardware is on the way.
We're unlikely to have anything concrete before E3, but should a new handheld be in development and if The Pokemon Company is the first to be granted access to game development, one could speculate that the first 5th generation Pokemon game will be released as a launch title. June just can't come quick enough!
