Apparently Nintendo have decided to end production of the Nintendo DS browser accessory www.myds.com.au/
Probably not the most popular accessory available, it has more bad points than good, but was good enough when used for simple things like checking your email.
This info is not 100% confirmed but it wouldn't surprise me if did happen, these things weren't exactly flying of the shelfs and into the consumers hands. So if your still after a DS Browser then you might want to grab one soon.

I heard about something like that happening, do you think there will be any advantages with these homebrew browsers compared to the Nintendo version?

Honestly, no. The DS is very limited in terms of memory and processing power. I don't expect any greater compatibility than Nintendo already achieved (probably a bit of optimisation though, of course).

I think there are two problems with it:

1. People expected a fully fledged browser, then complained when they couldn't surf everything. (Why you'd want to do more than check email, directions, little stuff, on a handheld, I don't know...)

2. Not enough hotspots. It is relatively hard to find them, at least ones that only have WEP encryption. And the signs they use to advertise aren't exactly big and standout, when they even have them.

I found it quite useful in Europe, especially as I had a tough time finding internet cafes (probably just wasn't looking in the right direction). I'd suggest writing down the addresses of a few centrally hotspots in each city you visit, though - as I said they aren't exactly brightly signposted.

I like the browser and it has been quite handy on the run email, directions etc, plus the memory expansion is great for dS development, DS linus and a megadrive emulator both use this function for extra memory. Also the mcdonalds/telsta wifi deal has been good. I boycott mcdonalds but am happy to use their free wifi, etc.

I'll probably be using it a lot for my trip to NZ later on this year,

It functions well enough for me

ATM there is no homebrew standalone browser that can match the opera for DS. It's great to have java support and bookmarking support, also the interface is miles ahead of homebrew browsers. In the future theres a lot of home but Opera is so much better in my eyes at the moment. I can check my banking, log into one of the web messengers (when not using Beup), peruse google maps, all handy things when your on the road.

Nope unless Nintendo release it from copywrite it will expire "70 years after death of author, or if work of corporate authorship, the shorter of 95 years from publication, or 120 years from creation2"

in short no , it will be illegal for probably your whole lifetime to download it

Heh, welcome to Abandonware.

You'd need a flash cart to use the ROM anyway, you may as well just use a Homebrew browser.

I think I will try out some homebrew browsers but they better be very good otherwise i will just download the other browser cos the only reason I do not download is because of my moral feelings but if nintendo aren't gonna be making any money anyway then I dont mind downloading Because i dont feel like i'm cheating nintendo!!

See it another way - there are more people with mobile phones than DS or PSPs and hence if you wanted a browser, the mobile phone would be better as a universal portable web browser.

Moble phones are quite affordable with web browsers. I have one, and I mainly use the wifi to hook up to the net at hotspots, work and at home. If you hook up using your provider it can get expensive.

I hope something better comes out for the DS, or a all new DS. But I dont see that happening any time soon.

very true but I do think some of the homebrew browsers are currently at par with the official nintendo ones so the only way is up!!!!!!!

Actually, Homebrew browsers are only in their infancy. They're only getting to things like displaying images and implementing form support and the like.
