Hardware \ Best Modchip for Kids

Hi all,

My kids both have a DS Lite and I've spent around $400 on games because whatever I buy for one, I have to buy for the other! They have actually broken a few of the games through neglect and rough handling when they change games and just leave them lying around to get stood on or ridden over so I've decided to get a modchip for both of them to solve the problem.

I've read about the R4, DS TT, and CycloDS but have seen none of them and don't know which one to get. What would you guys suggest? I'm looking for the easiest to use for a couple of 7 year olds, just want to play some games and maybe watch a movie or 2 on a long car ride. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Cheers.

I've always recommended R4 because it does everything necessary for cheap.

Slightly off-topic, a lot of people are citing their kids breaking games as a reason to get modchips or duplicate games. I mean no disrespect etc., but am curious as to why you and other parents haven't simply decided to tell the kids that they have to take care of their stuff, or they're never getting another one again. Surely they need to learn that kind of lesson sooner rather than later?

You are quite right, and when a game is broken it will not be replaced, regardless of the number of tantrums thrown. Thankfully this has actually only happened twice.

I also do believe that at the age of 7 momentary lapses in concentration will always happen and whilst I do consider my kids to be well behaved, we all make mistakes occasionally. The reason for moving to a chip is to lessen the possibility of games being forgotten in the excitement of a room full of 7 year olds all swapping games to try! Thanks for the reply so early in the morning

My 7 year old uses a N-card. I like it because it does not have any removable parts like a MicroSD card, it is just like a normal cartridge.

I keep the linker hidden so that he can't play with it or change the content without me doing it for him.

Of coarse this is just like a normal cartridge so it is not crush proof but no flash cart is. There are a stack of great homebrew games for the DS so you can happily use a flash cart without breaking any laws and still have good content.

funny thing is, i got both my kids R4's... they are two and seven... and the same game rivalry is a thing with them too... I went with R4's for the cheap and established factor... and, yes, they are good and do what they should, and are well built as well...

the only problem i encounter is they can delete games and or saves... not a problem with my seven yr old, but my two yr old has deleted both games and saves heh... now this really doesnt pose a problem as she just loves to play, so reload the game and she is good to go... the saves, meh, easy enuff to redo as well, so not that big of a problem either... long as your kids get along and wont delete each others saves in a fit of anger... all is good...

as an alternative as i have been trying alot of the better cards out just to see what all is good/better... I would have got my kids the Edge card, and am still thinking to switch over to it over the R4 for them... it is every bit as solid as the R4's, holds more skins which they love, yes 12 is plenty, but 30 is awespme... why switch? the edge has impressed me greatly in it is the same interface style with 3 buttons, but faster and overall nicer... it also changes how the games are listed over the R4, to me a vast improvement as it only shows the name of the game... no numbers or other nonsense... plays movies/music/runs all homebrew now at least the same if not better... both are the same price roughly if the edge isnt cheaper even at 50-55 bucks...

I did this with my younger brother many years ago, always wanted to play with my snes when i wasnt around so i video recorded myself playing super mario kart, gave him a broken controller and left the room. Lasted about 30 mins till he dropped the controller and realised it was still playing... good fun.

Back to the topic,

I have a m3 , DSTT and Edge4ds and my 5yo chooses the Edge over the other two because of the menu interface as Darm said, its just a lot more user friendly.

Also with the broken cartridges, not sure if Nintendo do it still but they used to have a replacement system, was about $5 -$10 to exchange a damaged N64 cartridge back in the day, would pay to give em a call tho.

Hi guys,

Thanks very much for all the feedback, much appreciated. I'll have a look at the Edge4DS as usability from a 5 and 7 year olds point of view is far different from my own

Pardon my ignorance here but can I simply copy the games they currently have over to the card or is that illegal / impossible?

It's pretty impossible. You have to download from a ROM site/torrent.

And that in itself is actually illegal, whether you own the game as a cartridge or not. The entire deal is very shady. Sure you can do it, and it's highly unlikely you'll be caught, but it puts you on the honor system, basically, since every game is available for download whether you own it or not. Please don't ask where to download the games; that's an instant ban here.

Thanks guys. A few last questions

Can anyone suggest where I can purchase the Edge4DS in Melbourne, or failing that, a reputable online seller?

Are there any SD cards you would suggest as being more compatible or are they all much the same?

I only know of 2

www.Gadgetgear.com.au & www.happycomputing.com.au
Gadget gear is slightly cheaper but they are actually Hong Kong based and you'll probably pay a higher freight, and Happy Computing is in Melboune.

/edit: oh and Happy also put the necessary files on the Sd card for you, any of the cards require some system files on the sd before they will work, my suggestions is that once you get it working, backup the card to the pc so you have an easy setup copy

you can format it in the pc , you should have been supplied with a small usb adapter for the microSD card then you will need to transfer the dstt system files to the card get them here download.ndstt.com/
and your set.

Sometimes these downloads can be a bit tricky as sometimes the download has everything in an 'eng' folder, if so , don't transfer the 'eng' folder just everything inside it. So you should end up with a TTmenu folder and a ttmenu.dat file on the root of your card.

Probably a good time to mention not to ask here where to get roms, its an instant ban, go see uncle google for that

i just bought my stuff @ gadgetgear. i really liked the crimson/black console, which i purchased and got the TT. looking at the specs, i bought mainly because it can hold a 4GB card plus it has a higher transfer rate. and also, seems to be the cheapest out of the 3 (R4, M3s).

i'm not sure if the TT comes with the usb adapter though. i'm still waiting for my bro to get home so i can get my hands on my BABYYYY

Well I picked up the Edge4DS today and I am very happy with it. Darminator thank you for the suggestion, you are spot on regarding the kids, they are finding it very easy to use. I picked it up from happycomputing.com.au, they were very friendly and helpful, I would highly recommend them.

One question, is it possible to get back to the game selection screen without powering cycling the DS?
