Hotel Dusk: Room 215 - 10/10

Hotel Dusk Room 215 is unlike any other game out there. It's an interesting novel-style mystery game that you set out to solve as a detective. It's played like you're reading a book with the DS on its side. With its sharp visuals, excellent dialog, and unique game play elements, it makes for a very rewarding gaming experience.

First, you hold the DS like a book, using the touch pad to move around on an overhead view and the left screen to look at your surroundings. There's a little notepad to write notes using the touchscreen, you can look at items in greater detail, and even interrupt conversations in mid sentence to ask questions.

The story follows Kyle Hyde as an ex-cop chasing a ghost from his past in an attempt to find closure in his life. This leads him to Hotel Dusk where he happens upon a variety of characters, each with his or her own secrets tucked away. You slowly unravel the mysteries through interaction with the hotel environment and questioning / talking with the other characters. While questioning people, it is possible to say the wrong thing and get yourself kicked out of the hotel, so be careful not to go to fast through the dialog. No worries though, as the game will just start you back at an appropriate place so you can replay the scenario.

The game writers really went all out with this one. Each character has an intriguing background, and even the normally mundane aspects of this type of game (examining various items in the environment) are spiced up with Hyde's humorous deadpan quips. Kyle Hyde really stands out in the game, and I hope this earns the game a sequel.

This game is really amazing, but at the same time, isn't for everyone. The graphics are mostly hand drawn. (With some 3D models added when necessary)

It's a really great game and I recommend it if you don't mind reading.
