You tried jumping ON the soldiers? Why did you think your guy was carrying a gun? From what I recall, Mario never ran around shirtless toting a pistol.
And, by the way, if that picture is from your gameplay experience, it is no wonder you couldn't get past level 2. You're not supposed to jump on the ground-cannons.
Contra 4 isn't that difficult. Games today are just way too easy. They take you by the hand and never let go. Now, admittedly, Contra games never take you by the hand in the first place (if modern games are the equivalent of floaties when learning how to swim, Contra games are the equivalent of a muscle-man tossing you as hard as he can into the deepest part of the pool), but it doesn't take more than 10 minutes to learn how everything in the game works.
Contra 4 is a game that rewards persistence and real skill. You can't half-ass your way through a Contra game. But the more you play it, the better you will get. Most games these days are virtually impossible to lose. But winning a Contra game is an achievement.
Oh, and by the way, the point of the game is NOT to run across the screen shooting like a maniac. Maybe that's why you're having trouble? I can get past the first level without shooting half of the bad guys that appear.
