Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates Reviews \ Detail

Hack n' slash for the DS - 9/10

Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles: Ring of Fates is a RPG game released on the DS, set as a sequel to Square Enix's Final Fantasy Crystal Chronicles on Gamecube.
Story-9/10
The game starts off with introducing us to two young twins, Yuri (the brown-haired boy), and his twin sister, Chevlinka (the blonde-haired girl). In the game, you control Yuri and Chevlinka through their many adventures in their quest to 'complete the Ring of Fates'.
The story is a very simple, yet touching story, but it brings me to believe that this game was aimed at the younger audiences. An excellent plot makes the backbone of any Final Fantasy game, and this is no exception.

Gameplay-8/10
In this game, we control Yuri and explore many dungeons to complete his quest. Functioning as a dungeon crawler, this game focuses on different classes and their separate abilities. For example, the Selkie class is the acrobatic class, using their ability to double-jump onto ledges, and sniping enemies from afar with their bow. Each class is required to use their abilities to move on, resulting in non-neglected characters.

In Ring of Fates, you walk around and slash in a free moving environment. No random battles anymore, which is a good change in the world of Final Fantasy. But the truly unique system in this game is the magic system. In this game, you collected special orbs, which, when used, release a burst of magic to either harm or heal. This could have been a good alternative to just simple casting, but something kept this away: the stacking system. To cast high level spells, such as Ultima and Firaga, you have to stack tonnes of target rings on top of each other, and release them at the same time. This resulted in a very laggy system. I saw more use of Cure than Curaga in my game, even when at level 100. Overall the gameplay makes this game a very quick game indeed, compared to the previous games, resulting in more action. Quite good, in my opinion.

The magic system in use.

Controls-10/10
The controls are very good and easily accessible. No problems could be found in the system.

Graphics-10/10
Like any other Final Fantasy game, this game's main ace was its graphics. Some of the smoothest, best graphics on the DS, with graphics similar to FF3 (on the DS).

Sound-9/10
Great music from the start, but it gets quite repetitive as time goes by. Very addictive.

Value-6/10
This is the part which failed to meet my expectations. The main game can be finished in as little as 10 hours. After you defeated the game for the first time, the game decides to reward you with something-New Game +. May sound appealing, but it was just the main game with higher levels. After you beat that, guess what came-New Game ++. Oh great. Now they expect us to beat the game a third time. You could call it repetitive. Well, after you beat the game, you could try Single player mode. Just the main game without the story, and the loss of three party members. Mhm.
Something new was created for this game-Multiplayer. What, you say? Multiplayer in a Final Fantasy game? Yes. It's just Single player mode, with up to three of your friends joining in with you. Unfortunately, its a Multi-card.....and its quite unlikely to meet up with a friend who has this game.

Something else of note is the Wi-fi symbol on front. Do not get tricked by it. The game only has one Wi-fi aspect in it-moogle trading. You get to paint your own moogle! How exciting. Wouldn't it be a lot more interesting for us if they gave the Multiplayer mode a Wi-fi aspect to it?

Overall-9/10
Great game, except that the 'Wi-Fi' symbol on front failed to meet my expectations.
