Ok, but I wanted more.... - 7/10
To start off, I would like to compare Super Mario 64 to its newer sequel, Mario 64 DS.
Mario 64 first came out on the N64. Then, it was a great, fun and funny platform that was great to play all the way through. In that version, there was 120 stars to collect. You could also only play as Mario. However, in the DS version, there is now an added 30 extra power stars to collect, as well as the added bonous of having 3 other characters:
Yoshi
Luigi
Wario
The graphics are a little better than its older counterpart as well as a few new courses to make your way through and collect stars. All in all, I think that the game still has the old charm of the original, but it also has it's downsides.
For example, it doesn't really make as much use of the touch screen (The most innovative feature of the DS) as i'd like. True, you can use it to move, but why? It is tedious and a lot harder to control than the trusty ditrectional pad.
The game:
As a platformer, this game does pretty well. It has the old charm of Mario's antics and his cool acrobatic moves, as well as some exciting gameplay that the levels and even walking around the castle offers. There is also minigames that make EXCELLENT use of the DS's touch screen that I think the main adventure should have had. Going back to the minigames, they are fun and can be challenging to play as well. An excellent example of the'yre use of the touch screen is the bomb-omb slingshot minigame. You have to pull back the slingshot and aim with the touch screen and then let go to blow bomb-ombs out of the sky. It is very fun and innovative.
The main story features 150 stars to collect and great bosses to fight as well. The added 3 characters add as well, as they each have their own abilities and characteristics. The downside is that it can get boring and gets repetitive.

Overall:
7/10
Overall, this game is just as good as the original in most respects (eg music, gameplay, humour) but its main fun is in the minigames. The main adventure is good, but as I said before, gets repetitive and boring after a while. This is the sort of game that if you love Mario, or haven't played the original, then buy it, but if you don't like mario or have played the original and thought it was ok, then you might want to go for another DS game. i'm not saying i'ts in any way bad, I'm just saying I wanted a little more.
