One of the many great features of the Nintendo DS is the Nintendo WiFi connection which allows DS owners to play against or with people online but in order to do that you need a wireless access point for the Nintendo DS to connect to. You can use a free public WiFi Hot Spot, the Nintendo WiFi USB connector or use a WiFi wireless router that is compatible with the DS.
An alternative options for Apple Mac owners is by using a Mac as a Wireless Access Point and to find out more check out this step by step informative guide Here
This guide is compilation of information from Nintendo and contributed information from the members of MyDS.com.au and has been split up into three separate sections for your convenience click one of thelinks below if you wish to skip ahead to a certain section.
Each router has a rating out of five stars with

being a recommended compatible router. The lower the star rating gets the less compatible the WiFi router will be. The WiFi routers with a low rating will most likely give you trouble, require you to run no encryption security, or won’t work at all. If a WiFi router is given a
rating then it’s not compatible with the Nintendo DS.
Selecting a WiFi Router
This is the advice Nintendo gives when selecting a WiFi router to suit the Nintendo DS
Most wireless routers are compatible with the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite. Before purchasing a wireless router, make sure of the following:
- 802.11b - Most routers are backwards compatible with the 802.11b standard. Routers that broadcast exclusively on 802.11g or 802.11n may not be compatible with the Nintendo DS.
- WEP - If you wish to secure your wireless network, the Nintendo DS is only compatible with WEP (Wired Encryption Protocol).
- Known Compatibility Issues - Most wireless routers are compatible with the Nintendo DS and Nintendo DS Lite. However, our experience has shown the following devices to be incompatible:
