Microsoft is taking a new direction it seems with the Xbox 360, as they're developing broader, more family friendly content for the system.

Microsoft's Alan Bowman has said that the company is aiming to raise sales through targeting different age groups, throwing up cartoon based titles and word-based puzzle games a few of the new things we might see in the future.

"A key strategy for us is to give broad choice for people. You need to provide content which broadens your base of users from core gamers to different age groups," said Bowman, "We're doing a lot in broadening the content for the Xbox 360."

Bowman also added that the infamous UK studio Rare is a key player in the move, and is already working on such content.
"Now they're starting to produce games with very, very broad appeal"

Analysts have already said that the move is clearly to compete with the Wii, but without an innovative new controller, the Xbox 360 may lack the pick up and play appeal that it needs for direct competition.

"Besides software, [Microsoft] also need a new controller. They need to change interface and offer a unique new hardware," Japan analyst Shunsuke Tsuchiya is quoted as saying.

Along with that, earlier this week Phil Spencer from Microsoft Game Studios said that Rare's developments for the Nintendo DS had given them a few hints on how to work some of that Nintendo magic to a broaden audience.
