News \ R18+ in Aus The Saga Continues

Earlier we reported that an R18+ rating for games in Australia was going to be on the agenda at the next meeting of the Attorney-Generals on March 28. We then informed you that it was looking unlikely before it was even discussed due to South Australian Attorney-General,Michael Atkinson, stating he would not change his stance on the issue. Currently all the Attorney-Generals must agree for a change to occur, meaning one state's Attorney-General can block a decision for the nation as Atkinson is doing here.

Now that we've recapped it seems an R18+ Rating for Games in Australia is still possible according to Ron Curry, the head of the Interactive Entertainment Association of Australia. He informs us that just because one rating is banned in one state it does not mean that this has to be the case for the rest of the nation. "In Queensland, they don't allow X-rated publications" said Curry "Although it is legal federally, South Australia could not allow the sale of R-rated games within the state while it is allowed federally."

If anything, R18+ games will create more awareness in parents so they actually take note of what they are buying for their their kids. It's only a small handful at current that are RC'd. Why do movies and magazines get to have an R classification but games don't? Gaming is just as prominent and in the mainstream eye as much as movies. I've heard stories of parents buying M/MA rated games for their kids just cause of the mindset of all games are fine for kids to play. When they see the R rating on the gamebox they'll be more likely to take note of the game and not buy it for their 10 year old kid.

Though there is the issue with customs stopping the game from getting through if its its been refused classification/banned here in OZ, or at least the chance of that happening anyway

well that is the point, restricting anything does nothing but make it a little more inconvenient to buy something, but if you are ordering it from america, it means 1) you get it cheaper and 2) it takes away from australian profits.. both a win win situation to me, but the blind lawmakers dont/cant see it, or just do not care... in the case of say guns, which are 'illegal' to have possession of... well in that case you can still easily get one (or more) but you tend to pay just a bit more... so only the police, outlaws, and people who really want to protect themselves or family have them... (which makes good people outlaws)... but a criminal can pull a gun without fear of someone pulling one back 99.9% of the time... no fear= more crime

Although I have to admit that Attorney-General Michael Atkinson is being a bit pig-headed and small minded.
As for games that require an R18+ rating, just import them when they get banned. I've done that a few times. It's easily done. (got to love internet shopping )

Great article by the way.
