Entertainment Industry tracker The NPD Group in America (Similar to Australia's GfK) have released information in a report which shows that 'hardcore' gamers spend more money on other forms on media than videogames. GameDaily reporting on the information from The NPD say that of the 10,000 consumers surveyed, 58% of hardcore gamers had bought a DVD, 46% purchased a CD, and only 43% purchased a videogame in the last six months. For the purposes of the study they defined a hardcore gamer as someone who plays games several times a week if not on a daily basis.
NPD's entertainment industry analyst, Russ Crupnick, said "We have this perception of hard-core gamers glued to their consoles, and immersed in virtual worlds, when in fact, they are still spending a lot of time with, and money on, music, movies, and other pastimes."
In the past year teenagers have helped the growth of the gaming industry as there has been a 41% increase in game sales to those in the teen years. At the same time it was the music industry that took the hit among teenage consumers taking a drastic 45% drop in sales over the last 12 months. This data does however not have access to information from downloadable services such as iTunes (popular with the young one's of the day) which would affect the data.
